Damaged Oil Well gets new BOP

Tonight the old blowout preventer (BOP) shall be removed by BP. Its failing had caused this summer’s big oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A new BOP will be installed. This shall prevent another spill, in case the final sealing of the well does not go according to plan.

After many weeks of only bad “oil-news”, the last weeks were only good. The spill was stopped, no oil ever endangered Southwest Florida’s coastlines. Our vacation home guests enjoy Cape Coral, our beaches, boating on the Gulf of Mexico, shopping …. – and soon the Macondo well should be sealed permanently.

Hurricane Activity picking up

Gaston - not a hurricane yet

After many quiet weeks, hurricane activity increased lately (3 active systems over the Atlantic). Until now our vacation homes in Cape Coral were not in any hurricane path in the 2010 season. However, we watch all storm systems closely to be prepared (and prepare our vacation home guests), if any of these storms heads in our direction. Interested customers can do their own tracking.

Gaston is still a depression. If it gets stronger, it will be upgraded to a Tropical Storm and possibly to a Hurricane of one of the categories 1 – 5.

Erfahrung mit Seabim-Ferienhaus CANDY

Empfehlung des Seabim-Ferienhauses CANDY von Familie Krischer aus Deutschland (Zweites Feedback als Langversion): “Lieber Herr Rotthaus, wir wollten uns hiermit nochmals recht herzlich bei Ihnen und dem ganzen Team von SeaBreeze für die vollkommen unkomplizierte und reibungslose Urlaubsplanung und Umsetzung bedanken. Angefangen vom Erstkontakt über Email und später telefonisch, lief alles reibungslos und zu meiner/unserer Zufriedenheit ( was ich von vorhergegangenen USA Reisen nicht immer behaupten konnte / schlechte Betreuung vor Ort, ein insolventer Vermieter, was mit vielen Diskussionen und Problemen direkt bei Anreise den Urlaub eigentlich schon zu Nichte machte ).

Das Haus war bei unserer Anreise in einem tadellosen Zustand und vor allem so, wie es im Internet präsentiert wurde. Die Ausstattung ist sehr gut, man hat alles zur Verfügung was man braucht. Gerade für die Kids war genügend Spielzeug und auch Pool-/ Strandspielzeug im Haus vorhanden. Wir fühlten uns vom ersten Augenblick an wohl, besonders mein kleiner Sohn, was mir persönlich sehr wichtig ist, hat sich direkt eingelebt. Der Terrassen-/ und der Poolbereich waren seine Lieblingsorte, wo er täglich mit uns mehrere Stunden verbrachte! Die Nachbarn, vorwiegend Amerikaner waren alle sehr nett und aufgeschlossen. „Hey how are you today“ hörte man immer und viele winkten wenn sie vorbei fuhren oder sich im Garten aufhielten! Ihre Kollegin Renate möchte ich hier nicht vergessen, sie hat uns eingecheckt und gab uns viele nützliche Tipps bei einem netten Gespräch auf der Terrasse. Der einzige negative Punkt war, dass die drei Wochen mal wieder viel viel zu schnell vorbei waren und wir wieder zum Airport mussten! Resümee: 100% Satisfaktion – 100% Empfehlung für andere Gäste – 100% gerne und jederzeit wieder. Vielen Dank und weiter so.”

Organic Food in Fort Myers – Pizza Fusion

A while ago we heard of a Fort Myers restaurant, that uses mostly organic ingredients. Some dishes (appetizers, salads, pizzas) are even gluten free. Its name is Pizza Fusion, part of a nation wide franchise. We thought, this might be interesting for our international guests and visited it tonight.

The prices are very reasonable (Menu). The atmosphere is casual / comfortable, including a nice bar area (photo). We enjoyed a zucchini al forno appetizer and pizza and thought it was a very good value for the price.

There is organic beer (I saw one gluten free) and organic wine. Our waitress Tori was very nice and brought us two open wines to taste. We chose a glass of full bodied Zinfandel, which went well with the pizza. Tori also explained very interesting specials for different days of the week (e. g. on Tuesdays a free bottle of house with a large pizza).

Unfortunately the meal was served with very (and I mean very) cheap silverware. I hope Tori can convince the owner to put it where it belongs …

Very interesting - the well tasting bottled water, was served in bio degradable plastic bottles, produced without oil! (re:newal). I like the idea, maybe we order some online. - We recommend to try the restaurant. Our Cape Coral vacation home guests or owners pass it on their way to the beaches and back.

Fusion Pizza delivers in a 5 mile radius. But although the location is right at Cape Coral bridge, they refuse to serve us on the other side of it.

Vacation Homes in Cape Coral – Where are the Mosquitos?

Florida regulars know that mosquitos can be a nuisance in the evenings of the warm summer months. This is especially true for the Everglades, but also for Lee County. During the day, they seem to be in hiding, but when the sun goes down, it can make sense to enjoy the swimming pool inside the screen of the pool cage. So, why is it, that our Cape Coral vacation home guests mostly do not see many mosquitos?

And why do people on the popular beaches of Sanibel, Captiva, Fort Myers Beach, etc. usually do not even think of the little bugs? An important reason is Lee County’s successful Mosquito Control Program, which includes spraying of certain breeding grounds. Home owners or renters, who want to learn more about this interesting subject should check out the Mosquito Control District’s website!

If we are bitten by an insect, which cannot be seen, it was probably by one of the ”no-see-ums”. They seem to show up only once in a while (spray and Off-candles should be used). So, most home owners or vacation home renters are not even aware of them. Vacation in Cape Coral – already hooked?

Of course, Cape Coral’s slogan is “Just Paradise”. And our Cape Coral vacation home guests know the reason for this expression. Otherwise there would not be thousands of guests from all over the world in our seabim homes every year! But certain experiences remind us more than others, how wonderful it is; the long water ways, nights on the boat dock, awesome sunsets (I am just watching one) …

A few days ago, vacation time was over for a visiting family. They flew home after they had stayed in one of our vacation homes in Cape Coral. It was their first visit to Florida. And today I learned, that immediately after arriving at home, they began looking for flights to be back in two months!! ALREADY HOOKED it seems …

Cape Coral Vacation Home – No Oil …

Nothing has changed in Southwest Florida. Wonderful weather, many attractions including our famous beaches. “Vacation homes in Cape Coral” are a great way to experience the Florida feeling. Come again or try it the first time!

No oil was ever close to our shores (Naples, Ft. Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Sarasota). And soon the Macondo well might stop being a threat; hopefully shortly after Labor Day (Sept 6, 2010). For a while it was not certain, whether the ”bottom kill” is still needed (see older post). Now BP is back to the original plan. Before the final “kill” they will take out the failed blowout preventer and replace it with a new one. So, if operation bottom kill does not go as planned, the new blowout preventer should be able to do what it was designed for – prevent another blow out … (more) — Heimo W.
