„Seit mehr als 10 Jahren machen wir im Normalfall 2x im Jahr Urlaub in Florida. Anfänglich haben wir in Hotels gewohnt, später die Vorzüge von Ferienhäusern schätzen gelernt. Seit dem unsere Familie gewachsen ist, kommen tatsächlich nur noch Ferienhäuser in Betracht, die wir bisher immer über die bekannten Portale gebucht hatten. Bis wir auf Seabim gestossen sind. Irgendwie schien alles viel zu gut zu sein. Der erste Kontakt mit Herrn Rotthaus war absolut freundlich und extrem schnell. Die Mietbedingungen (keine Kaution, Strompauschale im Mietpreis enthalten, etc.) viel zu gut um wahr zu sein. Wir hatten uns auf Empfehlung von Herrn Rotthaus für das Haus (Villa!) NARDEMKA entschieden und waren total begeistert. Das Haus war tatsächlich klinisch sauber und extrem gepflegt. Wir hatten stets den Eindruck, als hätte sich jemand bei der Einrichtung des Hauses viele Gedanken gemacht. Das erste Mal hatten wir 4 Wochen Urlaub geplant und fühlten uns in jeder Sekunde wohl. Unsere beiden Kleinen sprachen von Beginn an von “unserem Haus in Amerika”. Der Kontakt mit Seabim vor Ort war ebenfalls hervorragend. Während unseres Aufenthaltes trieb der Hurrikan Dorian sein Unwesen. Als der Vorlauf des Hurrikan ungefähr bekannt war, wurden wir umgehend von Seabim über notwendige Maßnahmen informiert. Hier ist es natürlich von Vorteil, dass die betreffende Verwaltung tatsächlich vor Ort ist. Wir haben für uns entschieden, dass für Cape Coral nur noch Seabim in Frage kommt. Vielen Dank für den tollen Urlaub!“

As Dorian weakened and is moving north, off Florida’s east coast, we will CLOSE this post. Seabim vacation guests: Please let us know, if your arrival times change due to flight cancellations.

Sept 2, 2019, 9:38 p.m.:
TRASH CANS: This evening we learned that our trash cans WILL be emptied tomorrow, although the company had informed us before that this would not be the case due to Dorian.  We were able to reach almost each of our guests to inform them. I hope the few remaining ones read this post. If your garbage pick up is scheduled for Mondays, please put the cans out tonight. Thanks! All other days will be one day later.

What a development over the last 12 hours! Dorian seems to completely miss Florida! While our east coast is not fully out of the woods yet, we can be quite certain that Cape Coral and Southwest Florida can stop preparing now. Our team will start to plan the reversal of all preparations. — This morning, several Seabim-guests informed us that they cannot be here as scheduled, because their inbound flights have been cancelled. We hope that all of them will finally make it to us!

NOAA track continues to move north-east. It becomes more and more unlikely that we will be impacted in a significant way.

Aug 30, 2019, 8:35 p.m.:
To our Seabim vacation home guests:
No garbage pick-up on Monday and Tuesday! — One of our customers reported flight cancellation Lufthansa out of Miama (Sunday); possibly more cancellations to come.

Aug 30, 2019, 2:10 p.m., 5:43 p.m.:
The newest NOAA track forecast is very good news for Cape Coral and Southwest Florida. Dorian seems to change direction sharply to the north after making landfall, away from us. If this scenario becomes reality, most likely, we will not feel much of the storm at all (apart from the usual, like some wind and heavy rain). Even the risk of losing power appears quite low under these circumstances. — We feel for the impacted areas on the east coast. All the best to them!

Aug 29, 2019, 9:12 p.m.:
Meanwhile, there is rationing for many items that we recommended to get (see below). If stores / stations still have drinking water or gas, for example, you can only get a small amount per person. — Stores are expected to get more supplies.

According to NOAA Advisory update, Sept 2, 2019, 8 p.m.:
NO IMPACT EXPECTED in Southwest Florida
. Therefore, disregard the following information!

  • Landfall most likely on Florida’s EAST coast (Tuesday).
  • Dorian could make landfall as a major hurricane, possibly at 130 mph – 156 mph (Cat 4).
  • As these storms normally weaken over land, we only expect limited impact in our area of Southwest-Florida, even if it moves closer to us, which does not seem to be the case.
  • If, after landfall, the storm’s path leads to Southwest-Florida, we still expect high winds, a lot of rain, thunderstroms, possibly tornados. If that happens, there could be some damage to screen enclosures and maybe roof leaks, etc.  Current track moves away from us after landfall.
  • Among other things, there could be power outages, some fallen trees, and flooding in the streets. Therefore, we advise all our customers to take the appropriate precautions. Do not be outside in hazardous conditions. Move loose objects inside the house. If you leave the house, take your house key with you, the electric garage door might not open. If current track is correct, these risk are low for Southwest Florida.
  • Prepare for power outages (seem less likely now):
    Get cash, drinking water and food, gas in your tank, BBQ propane gas, flashlights, batteries, etc. Watch for melting ice in your refrigerator. Be aware that communication might not be possible or limited (internet, phone lines, etc.).
  • At this time, we do not see reason for major concern in Cape Coral or Southwest Florida. We would not be surprised at all, if this event did not feel much different than a regular summer thunderstorm.

The closer the storm approaches the less we might be able to answer each email or phone call. Therefore, please follow our blog post. We will try to publish relevant new developments.

Südliche Eight Lakes:
